Brooke Bradford Churchill
is best known for her use of color and its relationship to subject matter.
As a modern Abstract Expressionist working in the traditions of de Kooning
and Rothko, her goal is to examine the connection between intuition and
artistic expression. "I do not start with an idea in mind and then
proceed to paint it," says Ms. Churchill. "I work with color
and find the meaning within its character and mass. This same color translates
the language of my subconscious onto the canvas, exposing truths that
might have otherwise remained hidden, even from me."
Ms. Churchill’s
paintings are the result of her concern with societal issues, and represent
her personalization of ideas affecting her. She is strongly committed
to the idea that her work should achieve its import not just on an artistic
level, but on a social one as well.
A native of California, Ms. Churchill
graduated from the University of Massachusetts before continuing her studies
at the American College in London. She has also studied with
the celebrated artist Beverly Cassell. |
